FKA Twigs Merch
MAGDALENE'S final piano ballad, "Cellophane," is a twisted comment on sex, power, and spectatorship told through pole dance. In one sequence, twigs carousels for off-screen viewers before falling Icarus-like into a place where primal creatures bathe in mud.

Mugs
FKA twigs, the artist formerly known as Tahliah Debrett Barnett, unites art and music into a unified whole that transcends genre. Her Mercury prize-nominated 2014 debut LP1 featured ethereal vocals that ranged from tremulous dog whistle frequencies to contralto aches, while her sonic architecture blended big drum sounds and amorphous digital menace with a deep well of female sorrow.
She's also an accomplished pole dancer, as showcased in the video for her latest single "Cellophane." Now she's partnering with The 1975's Matt Healy to raise awareness and money for sex workers during the coronavirus pandemic.
This isn't the first time twigs has turned her attention to a social issue, though. Last year, she and several other artists and activists launched an open letter supporting sex workers during the coronavirus crisis. The letter, which was endorsed by groups including Sisters Uncut and Amnesty International, has now been signed by more than 300,000 people. It is available for download here.
Pillows
FKA Twigs is one of our culture's few pop stars who really gets sex right. Dressed in thuggish leather and gothic lace, with a voice that combines occult chanting with Madonna's sexy sway, she is the kind of artist who commands a stage. She concludes most performances by walking over an attractive audience member and embracing him as she sings the final lines of her song.
Her art is as intricately crafted as her image. There's an autobiographical precedent in her stretched limbs and curls, which are a willful exaggeration of the parts of herself that made her feel different from her peers growing up. Yet she's also a creature of hype, which can make her seem less like a musician and more like a figurehead for the new cult of the weird. This is a shame, because it obscures the sonic and ethereal beauty of her music.
